"PRIMITIVE FORMS" EXHIBITION STATEMENT "PRIMITIVES", 2007
make these soft figures like writing a diary. When I first made my pieces I used to use photographs and images. However, now I try to make simple and algorithmic vector graphics that start purely from "0".
Real wood or metal materials each have their own texture. But digital information doesn't have real substance, scale or weight. There is only appearance and also only pure data. I wanted to use this strange tool to express the contemporary atmosphere that comes from my feeling of contradiction.
By the way, what is this contemporary I have mentioned? I've heard the word "Vive la difference" from my French friend, and I wondered how I could express one of our most important themes "common and difference". These must be a metaphor to express human beings, places and things.
I want to make the invisible become visible. For these pieces I used flat drafting paper and smooth milky ink. My idea was to create the obscure mood of our world by using clear computer graphics. So, these are quickening - primitive forms - that I wanted to visualize as organic, abstract and also probable things.

れらのやわらかな形を、私は日記を書くように作っています。これまで私は作品を作るにあたって、素材として写真やイメージを取り込み、加工することが多かった。でも今は、純粋に「0」から制作を始める、単純でアルゴリズミックな3Dグラフィックスの表現を試みています。

現実の木や金属には、各々の素材感があります。しかしデジタルの情報には、具体的な物質感、また、固有の大きさや重さがありません。それらは仮想の見た目であり、実際には純粋なデータが存在するだけです。そんな不思議な画材を用い、かつ今日的な雰囲気を表現したい、そんな私の中の矛盾から、これらの作品は生まれました。
さてここで言う今日的とは何でしょう? 以前、フランスの友人から「違いの重要性」という言葉を教えてもらいました。我々の問題の1つである「共通と差異」をどう表現するのかが、もっとも大切なことだと思い至ったわけです。それらは人・物・事のメタファーとならねばなりません‥。
見えないものを、見える形にする。平たな製図用紙の上に、滑らかな乳白インクで印刷が施されています。我々をとりまく不明瞭な気分を、コンピュータ・グラフィックスにおける透明感で表現したいと考えました。そう、それらは−始源の形体−のように胎動する、有機的で抽象的で確率的なものを目指したものなのです。

They are the forms that were automatically generated by making full use of algorithm as a sole tool, resulting from the meeting of chance and necessity. Making things invisible visible. Far from any restraints that material usually tends to impose on the finished work, these organic and unique - one and only - forms change their aspect if looked at from different angles, inviting the viewer into the three-dimensional world.

っ白な壁面に、浮かび上がる無数の作品。微細な光の変化により、それまで知覚していなかった物体が目の前に立ち現れる。そこに描かれているのはアルゴリズムをツールとし、偶然と必然が重なり合い自動生成された形態である。「見えないものを、見える形にする。」素材に捕われないその有機的な形態は1つとして同じものは無く、見る角度により表情を変え、私達鑑賞者を3次元の世界へいざなうのである。
