he self-portraits of Masashi Iwasaki have appeared before us after having undergone a number of changes. These changes, however, have been wiped away by the endless formation process of his style, yet at the same time the background one would expect to find encompassing him has also been erased. There is no way for us to have any idea of where he is standing, or where he is gazing within his work.

he self-portraits of Masashi Iwasaki have appeared before us after having undergone a number of changes. These changes, however, have been wiped away by the endless formation process of his style, yet at the same time the background one would expect to find encompassing him has also been erased. There is no way for us to have any idea of where he is standing, or where he is gazing within his work.
He is alone, in a non-specific place.
In seeing this posture, we come to realize that all people, not just he, may in fact be a solitary, and abstract existence, and that this choice of being alone may perhaps be the first step to freedom from the trivial promises which bind us.
There are times when the arrangements of life, arrangements such as the racial, linguistic, religious and climactic characteristics of each and every country, cause us to forget the strength which can be found in the solitude of the naked individual. Such arrangements are what block the flow of history, causing a separation and classification of people, and the confinement of the lives of the individual. The word, "virtual reality" has been used to represent in a half-negative tone the world created by computers, but perhaps instead it has been referring to that world created by the societies of the world, blindly adhering to the arrengements of the human condition.
I think someone once said that true solidarity begins with solitude.
Computer technology is a form of media which does not place emphasis on indigenous factors. In making his own self-portraits, Masashi Iwasaki has conducted an objective search for the perceptions of "Japan" he holds within himself, and through the use of computers, a form of media not particularly bound by the characteristics unique to this country, he has preserved and stored it in another form.
Masashi Iwasaki has attempted to minimize himself in his work.
As a result, he loses his background, viewpoint and base, yet is able to confirm to himself that producing works of art is a means of looking directly at the many and various conditions which form himself, preparation for taking that first, heavy step into a new world. The world which Masashi Iwasaki is striving to reach is not a garden of dreams at the end of an escape. From the words of his own commentary about his work I sense that he does not consider art to be a means for idle fancy.

崎正嗣の自画像は、途中いくつもの変化を経て、私たちの前に現れる。しかし、変化の痕跡は繰り返される加工によって拭いさられ、同様に、かつて彼とともにあったはずの背景も消されたあとだ。作品の中の彼が、どこに立ちどこを見ているか、私たちが知るきっかけはどこにも無い。
崎正嗣の自画像は、途中いくつもの変化を経て、私たちの前に現れる。しかし、変化の痕跡は繰り返される加工によって拭いさられ、同様に、かつて彼とともにあったはずの背景も消されたあとだ。作品の中の彼が、どこに立ちどこを見ているか、私たちが知るきっかけはどこにも無い。
彼はひとり、そうやって定かでない場所にいる。
その様子を観る内に、私たちは、彼ばかりでなく人はすべて孤独で抽象的な存在であるかもしれないと気づく。しかしまた、孤独を選択するのは、瑣末な約束ごとから軸足を引き上げ、自由に歩きだせる状態なのではないかとも考える。
私たちは、国々の約束ごと−たとえば風土、言語、民族、宗教などの特性−によって、孤独である裸の個人の力強さを忘れるときがある。それらに閉塞した歴史が、人を分別し、個人が生きる範囲を狭めることもある。仮想現実という言葉は、コンピュータが創出する世界を半ば否定的に表してきたが、むしろ、それは、国々が過去から固執してきた各々の約束ごとがそのようにつくりだした社会のほうではなかったか。
真の連体は孤独からはじまる、とかつて誰かが言っていたように思う。
コンピュータ・テクノロジーは、土着的な要素を主としないメディアだ。岩崎は、自画像の制作において、コンピュータという、この国の特性をさほど必要としないメディアによって、自分の像がもっている中から「日本」という条件を客観的に検索し、別の項目に保存しようとする。
岩崎正嗣はミニマムな彼自身であろうとする。
その結果、彼は背景や視点や足元を失うが、彼にとっての制作が、自分をかたちづくる条件の数々を正視する作業であり、重い軸足を持ち上げ別の地に降ろすための準備でもあることを確認する。しかし、岩崎が向かおうとする別の地は、逃避の先に夢見る楽園ではない。彼にとっての芸術が、空想に終始しようとするためのものではないことを、私は、彼の芸術についての言葉の中に感じとっている。
